The Eccentric History of Cuero's (Literal) Turkey Trot
Features journalism, particularly about unique subcultures, has been a passion of mine since it was the topic of my colloquium at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized study, which I graduated from in 2012.
But as my professional career pivoted to marketing, opportunities to write about the weird side of American culture became fewer and further between. That is, before I was driving from Austin to the Texas Coast with my husband and saw a massive mural of an art deco woman with a turkey in the small town of Cuero.
The deeper I dove into the history of Cuero's Turkey Trot, which has been occurring in some form since 1912, the more intrigued I became. The result of my curiosity? A long-form features piece combining in-person interviews, on-the-ground reporting, and archival research.
